Everybody asks, "What's the best ereader?" It's a natural question, but the wrong one. It's like asking what the best laptop is. It all depends on your needs.

In an overview, one of the most important factors will be how much content is available. When considering content, the file standard used is also important. For example, while Kindle offers the largest library of content, it doesn't use EPUP, but uses Amazon's own format. This means that material you have downloaded elsewhere often cannot be read on the Kindle. And your Kindle books cannot be read on another non-Kindle ereader.

Which leads us to the dreaded DRM (Digital Rights Management). These restrict you from converting your material to another format, and from copying it. Amazon has even gone so far as to delete ebooks from Kindles after they have been purchased. In other words, even after you have paid for a download on your Kindle, you still don't own it. This is something that everyone should consider before jumping in and buying a ereader.

Another decision will be whether you want an interactive ereader. These will allow you to highlight and make notes on the book. Kindle, Sony and Nook all offer interactivity. If you just want to read, you can save a few bucks by buying a non-interactive reader.

Other factors to consider will be screen size, Wi-Fi capabilities, resolution, battery life, charging time, weight and, of course, cost.

Speech to text and formats are both also important.

Consider what you needs are, and buy the e-reader that best suits them.
